The Deal (Meaning)

Mitski describes a moment of solitude, walking at night when the world is still and thoughts feel heavier. In this silence, there’s a sense that something unseen—whether fate, the universe, or her own subconscious—is offering a trade. If she could let go of something, what would she give up? What would she take in return?

Then, she notices a bird watching her, the only living thing that seems to acknowledge her presence. In its silence, she finds a message, or perhaps she projects one onto it—either way, it speaks to something deep inside her.

If she were to truly give up her soul, if something took it from her, the suffering might fade—but so would everything else. She wouldn’t be herself anymore. Without that core part of her, she wouldn’t hurt, but she also wouldn’t feel, wouldn’t create, wouldn’t live in the same way. There’s a realization in this: pain and selfhood are intertwined, and letting go of one means losing the other.

There’s a deal that I made

The song closes on this line, leaving it unresolved. Maybe the deal was never made, or maybe it was made long ago. Either way, Mitski sits with the weight of it, the choice lingering in the air.
