METZ: Breaking Boundaries with ’99’ and ‘Entwined’

METZ, the formidable Canadian trio consisting of Alex Edkins, Chris Slorath, and Hayden Menzies, is poised to embark on a new sonic journey with their upcoming album, “Up On Gravity Hill,” slated for release on April 12 via Sub Pop. This album marks a significant evolution for the band, promising a more refined yet still powerfully intense sound.

Produced in collaboration with Seth Manchester, known for his work with artists such as Mdou Moctar and Lingua Ignota, “Up On Gravity Hill” showcases METZ pushing their boundaries even further. Manchester previously worked with the band on their acclaimed album “Atlas Vending” in 2020, and their reunion promises to deliver a fresh perspective on their signature sound.

According to Edkins, the lyrical content of “Up On Gravity Hill” represents a departure from their previous work, with a newfound directness and starkness. “I tried to be direct with my words,” says Edkins. “This work meant a big step in that sense.”

Fans eager for a taste of what’s to come can delve into two preview tracks from the album: ’99’ and ‘Entwined (Street Light Buzz)’. ’99’ demonstrates METZ’s classic centrifugal force while introducing a new level of hi-fi definition to their sound, showcasing a visceral intensity tempered with precision. Meanwhile, ‘Entwined (Street Light Buzz)’ retains the band’s signature energy but adds a melodic and vocal essence reminiscent of Ty Segall, offering a fresh twist on their established style.

In addition to the album release, METZ is gearing up for live performances, with “Up On Gravity Hill” set to debut at the Canela Party 2024 in Torremolinos this summer. The band has also confirmed two European tours, offering fans across the continent the opportunity to experience their electrifying performances firsthand.

The first tour kicks off in August, with highlights including appearances at the Green Man Festival in the UK and La Route Du Rock in France. The second tour, slated for November, will take the band to cities across Europe, from Paris to Prague, culminating in a series of UK dates.

While the November tour will be extensive, METZ regretfully announced that it will not include Spain, disappointing fans who were hoping for a chance to see the band live. Nevertheless, with their dynamic new album and a packed touring schedule, METZ is poised to captivate audiences around the world, solidifying their status as one of the most exciting bands in contemporary rock music.
