After 6 years, Taeyang, a prominent South Korean singer and member of the popular K-pop group Big Bang, has made a triumphant return to the music scene with his highly anticipated solo album titled “Down to Earth.” This album marks a significant milestone in Taeyang’s career as it reflects his personal growth and rediscovery of core values during his hiatus.
Set to be released on Tuesday, “Down to Earth” features six captivating tracks that revolve around the theme of being “down to earth.” Taeyang revealed that this concept emerged from his own experiences during the years he was away from music. He expressed how difficult it was to be unable to release music against his will and not have a clear vision or goal. However, he found solace and inspiration in watching the sunset, realizing that he had overlooked essential values in life.
Taeyang took an active role in the creation of the album, serving as a lyricist for all six tracks and contributing to the composition of “Vibe.” He shared that he would jot down notes before going to bed each night and that his nighttime jogs during the pandemic provided him with a space to reflect on his thoughts. These reflections naturally became the thematic core of his songs.
The album’s lead track, “Seed,” pays homage to the Korean pop music of the 1980s and ’90s, blending nostalgic melodies with heartfelt lyrics that convey Taeyang’s honest thoughts and aspirations for the future. Additionally, “Shoong!,” a collaboration with Blackpink’s Lisa, played a significant role in initiating the album’s production. Another notable collaboration on the album is the pre-release single “Vibe,” featuring Jimin from the sensational K-pop group BTS.
During his hiatus, Taeyang had the opportunity to connect with younger K-pop artists and build casual friendships, enjoying meals together and getting to know them on a personal level. He expressed regret for not having had such opportunities during his busy days.
Grateful for the support he received during his challenging years, Taeyang expressed his appreciation to the staff and producers of the Black Label, the YG Entertainment affiliate he recently joined. He also acknowledged the transformative impact his family, especially his 17-month-old son, had on his life and worldview, both in music and beyond.
Looking ahead, Taeyang is gearing up for a global tour, with his primary goal being to bring happiness to his fans through his latest album. He also hinted at the possibility of a group comeback with Big Bang, stating that it was not an entirely impossible plan. He eagerly anticipates an opportunity to reunite with fans alongside his fellow group members.
“Down to Earth” showcases Taeyang’s artistic growth and introspection during his hiatus, promising an exciting musical journey for fans who have eagerly awaited his return.
