Krishna Kaul, widely known as KR$NA, is an esteemed Indian rapper who made a prominent mark on the Indian hip-hop scene during the mid-2000s. Originally performing under the stage name Prozpekt, he played a pivotal role in shaping the genre’s early years in the country. KR$NA gained further recognition through his appearance as himself in the 2019 Bollywood film Gully Boy. Renowned for his exceptional writing and technical skills as a rapper, he is also known for his controversial beefs within the Desi Hip-Hop scene.
Krishna Kaul was born on 4 October 1987 in Delhi, into a Kashmiri Pandit family. He spent a significant part of his childhood in South London, where he attended school for several years. It was during this time that Kaul discovered his passion for rapping, starting at the age of fourteen in an effort to connect with his peers in London.
Kaul began his rap career in the early 2000s, adopting the stage name Prozpekt. In 2009, he released his debut album, “Still Here,” which garnered critical acclaim and achieved commercial success. This album played a pivotal role in establishing Kaul as one of India’s leading rappers.
In 2013, Kaul signed with Universal Music India, taking his career to new heights. His second album, “Sellout,” was released in 2014 and further solidified his position in the Indian rap scene. The album featured hit singles such as “Kaisa Mera Desh” and “Aaj Bhi,” contributing to its success.
In 2019, Kaul made a memorable appearance as himself in the Bollywood film Gully Boy. The film not only received critical acclaim but also became a commercial success, playing a crucial role in introducing Indian hip-hop to a wider audience.
Following his breakthrough, Kaul released three more albums: “Time Will Tell” (2019), “Third Eye” (2021), and “Dope Anthems” (2022). He has collaborated with notable Indian rappers such as Divine, Naezy, and MC Stan, further expanding his artistic range.
In his personal life, Krishna Kaul is married and has two children. He currently resides in Mumbai, India.
Throughout his career, Kaul has received several accolades, including Best Male Rapper, Best Hip Hop Album, and Best Rap Song at the Mirchi Music Awards in 2015. Additionally, he was recognized as the Best Hip Hop Artist at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2019 and received the Best Indian Act award at the BBC Asian Awards in the same year.
