Mijoo, the multi-talented artist who rose to fame as a member of the girl group Lovelyz and gained recognition for her comedic skills, has embarked on her solo career with the release of her single “Movie Star.”
During a media showcase held in Seoul on Wednesday, Mijoo shared her long-awaited solo debut story, evoking both laughter and tears among the attendees.
Expressing her nervousness, Mijoo stated, “I feel more nervous than I did during my first debut. After nine years, I am finally making my solo debut. I have put a lot of effort into this and will show you everything I have prepared. Please enjoy it with me.”
Having initially debuted as a member of Lovelyz in 2014, it took nine years for Mijoo to make her solo debut. In recent years, she has gained immense popularity through her appearances on various TV variety shows.
Her first solo single, “Movie Star,” is a reflection of Mijoo’s personal journey and the emotions she experienced while striving to achieve her dreams. The title track, with its disco-infused house genre melody, showcases Mijoo’s vibrant energy and portrays heartfelt emotions through its lyrics.
“The lyrics of ‘Movie Star’ instantly captivated me. It felt like my own story. As a child, I used to watch stars on TV, dreaming of becoming like them,” shared Mijoo. “I still can’t believe that my dream has come true.”
In a dream-come-true moment, Mijoo’s longtime role model, singer Lee Hyo-ri, stars alongside her in the music video for “Movie Star.” Both artists are affiliated with the same company, Antenna. Actor Lee Yi-kyung also features in the music video.
“I have looked up to Lee Hyo-ri since I was a child. It is a great honor for me. She is magnificent on stage yet so friendly during TV shows. I respect her and aspire to become like her,” expressed Mijoo.
Showcasing her vocal prowess, Mijoo demonstrates her range in the single’s other track, “Miss You.” This poignant ballad overflows with emotions as Mijoo’s soft yet clear timbre blends seamlessly with the sentimental melody.
Mijoo revealed that it took approximately a year to present herself as a soloist on stage. She expressed her desire to differentiate her TV persona from her stage presence, aiming to bring joy and laughter to viewers through her television appearances while establishing herself as an artist who continuously pursues her dreams and challenges herself on stage.
In November 2021, Mijoo and most of her bandmates ended their contract with Woolim Entertainment, temporarily halting Lovelyz’s activities. The group denied rumors of disbandment and showcased their unity by appearing together on an online music show in November.
Emotionally overwhelmed by her new start, Mijoo couldn’t hold back tears. “It has taken a long time. I watched other singers and imagined all the things I wanted to do. Now, actually standing here like this, I feel so many emotions. It’s overwhelming,” she said with a tearful smile. “I know this wouldn’t have been possible without the support and patience of the people who waited for me. I am incredibly grateful.”
After leaving Woolim Entertainment, Mijoo signed with Antenna with the support of comedian Yoo Jae-seok, with whom she had showcased remarkable chemistry on variety shows. Yoo, who is also affiliated with Antenna, played a significant role in helping Mijoo gain recognition as an entertainer.
Mijoo mentioned that Yoo was one of her biggest cheerleaders before her solo
